Questions - Work Out Your Budget

To work out the cost of a simple garden using some basic features we can use a simple cost structure (per square meter):

  • Decking = £50 (includes foundation, weed membrane, decking frame, decking boards & labour)

  • Paving = £80 (includes hardcore foundation, Indian stone paving & labour)

  • Turf = £15 (includes good quality top soil, turf & labour)

  • Planting = £30 (includes basic evergreen plants, bark mulch & labour)

You can use these formulas to get a ball park figure for your basic garden changes:

  • First measure all the boundaries of your garden (in meters).

  • Draw this onto squared paper making sure 1 square = 1 metre.

  • Work out your design areas (materials) and then add up the squares of each material.

  • Calculate the individual area costs using the formulas above and add this all together.

  • Don't forget that you will need to add a few extra costs such as:

    • design fees (a design is used for accurate quotes)

    • design project coordination (to monitor the build process)

    • site clearance & skips (if you're not starting with a blank canvas garden)

    • any other design features such as raised beds, water features, fencing, trellis, seating, bbq etc.

    • 10% contingency (for added extras such as drainage or unknown discoveries)

A typical straight forward design based on square shapes for a square garden (10m by 10m)

  • ¼ paving = 25 squM = 25 x £80 = £2000

  • ¼ planting = 25 squM = 25 x £30 = £750

  • 2/4 turf = 50 squM = 50 x £15 = £750

Budget £3500

  • Contingency = £350 (at 10%)

  • Design Extras = £450 (design fee and water feature)

Total Budget = £4300
